My good friend Erica recently planned a happy hour to celebrate her fabulous new job. I was excited to be a part of her celebration but even more so when I found out we were going to 83 Proof in San Francisco; home of the most delicious basil gimlet I’ve had to date in the bay area.
We arrived in the prime of happy hour pushing our way through a crowded room only to luck out with an empty space upstairs on the balcony. Thankfully for us, a group of people were on their way out leaving us with a table and several chairs. We did have to walk back downstairs to the only bar to order a drink, but I was pleasantly surprised by how quickly the bartenders worked; I didn’t stand around for more than a few minutes before I placed my order.
Even though it was technically “happy hour”, my basil gimlet was $8.00. Recently a transplant from Portland, OR, I would hardly call these happy hour prices. I ended up spending $40 with tip on 4 drinks making this a very expensive happy hour. I usually only come here for a special occasion, so I will bite my tongue on the pricing and just enjoy the delicious basil gimlets. They really are the main reason why I like this place. I have never actually ordered anything else so I am unable to comment on the full drink menu (no food).
As you can see we were having a great time and were ready (happily buzzed on basil gimlets) to move on to the rest of our evening. The final four of us left around 8p.m. for some delicious Thai food, a short walk away, and dancing at The W Hotel. 83 Proof is located in a convenient part of SOMA making it a great starting point to your night out in San Francisco.
